Stephen Gross

Stephen G. Gross is an associate professor of History and the Director of the Center for European and Mediterranean Studies at New York University. He earned his PhD from UC Berkeley in 2010. His research and teaching explores the political economy and international relations of twentieth century Europe, with a particular focus on Germany. His first book, Export Empire: German Soft Power

in Southeastern Europe, 1890–1945, appeared with Cambridge University Press in 2015. He is now completing a second book with Oxford Press, Energy and Power: Germany in the Age of Oil, Atoms, and Climate Change, which will be forthcoming in 2023. His research has been supported by the Andrew Carnegie Foundation, the Andrew Mellon Foundation, the Institute for New Economic Research, and the Fulbright Program. His articles have appeared in a variety of journals, including Contemporary European History, Central European History, German Politics and Society, Foreign Policy (online), and Foreign Affairs (online).
